Stanley Hasty (Feb. 1920 - June 2011)

Stanley Hasty will long be remembered as one of the greatest teachers and performers of all time. He was an extremely gifted player, having held positions with the National Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, and the Indianapolis Symphony. Even more than his playing, though, his teaching will be remembered.

During his lifetime he was on the faculty of the Julliard School, Indiana University, Peabody Institute, New England Conservatory, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Though the most remembered of his teaching years would be at the Eastman School of Music.

Some of his notable students include Sean Osborn, Nathan Williams, Deborah Chodacki, Larry Combs, Frank Kowalsky, and Michael Webster. He was known as a great musician, but also as an extremely warm, caring person. His legacy will continue to live on through his students and his ideals as we all continue to strive to be the best people, and musicians, we can be.

"He certainly had high expectations and his kind of Hasty’s Law was in
this order: to be a good human being, a good musician and then a good clarinet player."

- Tom Martin in an Interview with Elizabeth Marie Gunlogson.
